UK Parliament Week has been fantastic with 36 youth organisations and schools across the constituency signing up to take part. It has been brilliant to hear from schools about their activities. Gwenfro Primary were writing persuasive speeches and Rhosnesni High who held their own General Election and had a 360 virtual tour of the Houses of Parliament.
I was impressed by the pupils of Dosbarth Harlech at St Mary’s Brymbo who wanted to hear about the job of an MP but also ask me questions. They have set up their own campaign to stop brain rot and the use of memes. They intend to take this forward with assemblies and work with other classes, inspired by what they had learned about Parliament.
Ysgol Clywedog’s School Council were interested in how to engage the whole student body in their work as well as how to gather their views. They were working with staff in their canteen as well as Wrexham County Borough Council to look at provision and how it can be improved. It was great to meet them again.
Senedd Yr Ifanc held their UKPW event at the Guildhall and this was really well attended. The session saw participants learn about the history of Parliament as well as ask questions of their local MP, me! Questions ranged from farming inheritance tax to drug and alcohol mis use and the use of cover and supply staff in schools.
I am so proud that Wrexham received the largest number of sign ups for UK Parliament Week in Wales. Engaging young people in politics is vital for our democracy.
