I am one of over 100 Labour MPs who have signed this joint letter from Dr Beccy Cooper MP and Alex Ballinger MP asking the Chancellor to consider a targeted levy on “harmful online gambling products” with this money used to address child poverty.
There is growing evidence of significant harm caused by online gambling products and it is therefore important that the Government considers the levy. Our manifesto committed us to reduce the harms associated with gambling.
The letter does not advocate for an increase in betting duty for the horse racing sector. In our constituency we have Bangor on Dee Racecourse as well as Chester Racecourse nearby, which provide important local jobs and venues to attract visitors.
Tackling child poverty needs a wide ranging approach and targeted long term investment.
