A number of Wrexham constituents including residents and postal workers have contacted me regarding issues with Royal Mail both in terms of postal deliveries and working practices.
I have raised these concerns with UK Government Minister Blair McDougall and will continue to follow up with him again with these latest allegations.
I visited Wrexham Sorting Office at Christmas as I do each year but was unaware that Royal Mail management allegedly made the decision to hide post in advance of my visit, an allegation made by Councillor Marc Jones at Wrexham County Borough Council Executive Board this week.
If this is correct, I am deeply concerned about this practice, and I will be contacting the Sorting Office.
Royal Mail and Ofcom were compelled to appear in front of the Department for Business and Trade Select Committee on 24th March and I provided examples from Wrexham in their call for evidence.
I had written to Royal Mail and Ofcom in advance of their committee appearance and to date have not received a response from either organisation, something which is completely unacceptable.
This silence is however representative, in Royal Mail’s case, of a private company putting profit before the needs of its customers and not meeting its Universal Service Obligation and in Ofcom’s case, a regulator who is not taking appropriate steps to intervene.
I fully support the Communication Workers’ Union “Stand By Your Postie” campaign and it is important that we separate our hardworking, front-line postal workers from Royal Mail management’s failings.
If anyone does have concerns that they would like to share with me, in confidence, please contact my office on 01978 788854 or email [email protected]
I am pleased that Wrexham County Borough Council has now added its weight behind the issue.
The more of us that call out Royal Mail for their actions and their continual service failures that affect the people of Wrexham, the better.
