Wrexham Law Courts
The team I met were dedicated and passionate about justice and reforming the system. Despite having to deal with challenging individuals, it was clear that those working there are very much person focussed and looking at many options other than custodial sentences where they can. The magistrates I spoke to mentioned the increase in anti social behaviour in the courtroom and the fact that they and others are facing more abuse and online misinformation. Nevertheless everyone emphasised the importance and at times rewarding aspects of their roles.
Maximus Employment
It was great to meet the team and clients at Maximus UK in Wrexham where I was keen to hear first hand about the employment and disability support services that they provide, supporting people to overcome barriers to employment and find sustainable work.
Cats Protection
The North Wales Cat Centre is a fantastic facility. I was delighted to visit and hear about the great work they do in Wrexham and beyond. They received a lot of support from our local community here in Wrexham. One area that they are a needing support with is cat foster carers and if you feel able to get involved in this, check out the information here
We Mind the Gap
We Mind the Gap have some incredible projects and the We Inspire programme is one that I know has benefited two secondary schools here in Wrexham: Ysgol Clywedog and Ysgol Bryn Alyn. The focus is to work with children who are not attending school for a range of often complex reasons, not just school refusal and support them to re-engage. The programme lasts for 12 weeks, working with group of 10-15 students. The programme supports them to find their voice, their place and build resilience to challenges. The funding for this has now ended and I am working with the We Mind the Gap team to continue to explore funding opportunities so that more children in Wrexham can benefit from this.
