The Safer Streets Summer Initiative by the UK Government provides £66m for hotspot policing across the country.
It has been developed to address the surge experienced at this time of year with increasing tourism and school holidays.
In Wrexham, a local plan has been drawn up, focussing on retail theft, anti-social behaviour, violent crime and knife crime.
For example, efforts by NWP Wrexham Town including a dedicated team of officers focusing on shoplifting and business security have already seen a 21% fall in recorded retail theft in the last 12 months. The Summer Initiative will help to build on this excellent work.
We already see community focussed policing in use in Wrexham and this initiative will strengthen this further. Partnership working and engagement with the community is at the centre of this. The police have been and will continue to be in attendance at events, for example Wrexham City Carnival and Rhosddu Fun Day as well as ensuring an integrated approach with youth and health services.
The police will also be using social media to share information with the public, for example the recent identification of 5 young people connected with anti-social behaviour in Acton and Borras which has seen them receive referrals to the Youth Justice Service. This communication builds confidence and understanding of the steps the police are taking.
The scheme runs until the end of September.
